Early School Leaving (ESL) is an obstacle to economic growth and employment. ESL hampers productivity and competitiveness, and fuels poverty and social exclusion. 

The ESLPLUS Project is coming to an end. In our next and final webinar we will discuss three ESL case-studies from Italy, Portugal and The Netherlands. In addition we will update you on the final findings of the ESLPLUS Project

Peter de Zoete – School Leader Berlage Lyceum – “Webinar Host”

Peter will be your webinar host for today and will give you an update on the ESLPLUS project. Peter is School leader at Berlage Lyceum in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Peter also works as an education consultant for ESHA.org / ESLPLUS.eu . For 20 years, Peter worked for Microsoft (based in Amsterdam, London, Hong Kong and Seattle). After Microsoft, Peter worked as a Media/Tech Consultant for various start-ups and recently joined Berlage Lyceum in Amsterdam. Peter studied at The Academy of Sports in Amsterdam and holds a Master Culture, Organzation and Management at the Free University in Amsterdam. Peter lives and works in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

João Costa – Secretary of State of Education  -  “ESL in Portugal”

João Costa is a Full Professor of Linguistics at the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences at the Universidade Nova in Lisbon. He graduated in Linguistics from the Faculty of Letters at the University of Lisbon, and completed his PhD in Linguistics at the University of Leiden. During his studies, he was a visiting scholar at MIT. His area of research is formal linguistics, language acquisition and development and educational linguistics. He is the author of several books and over 100 articles and book chapters. Until November 2015, he was the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, at Universidade Nova and President of the Scientific Council of Social Sciences and Humanities at the Science and Technology Foundation. He acted as member of the Scientific Council of the National Reading Plan, the National Commission of the International Institute for the Portuguese Language, and the Consulting Council of the Camões Institute. He was also President of the European Association of Linguistic Students (SOLE) and the Portuguese Linguistic Association. Besides his teaching and research activities at his University, he has been a guest lecturer at several universities in Brazil, Macau, Spain and the Netherlands.

Elleke van Duin – Media agency owner & Parent – “ESL the parent perspective”

In 2008 Elleke started her own text- and publishing office together with Barbelijn Bertram. Together they write articles, stories and interviews for magazines and newspapers, like het Financiele Dagblad, Marie Claire, Mama Magazine. Elleke and Barbelijn are specialized in human interest, lifestyle, travelling all with a female focus. Elleke experienced firsthand an ESL situation in her family. 

Eszter Szegedi  - Tempus Public Foundation – “ESLPLUS Closing Comments”

Eszter coordinated the ESPLUS project. Eszter coordinated six European partners to drive the ESL+ Project. Eszter will deliver the closing comments of the project. She will discuss the ESL+ APP, The ESL Portal as well as the ESL Statistical module. Eszter holds a senior position at Tempus Public Foundation based in Budapest in Hungary.
