In the background of early school leaving, in each individual case, there is a number of complex and interrelated causes. To unfold these, and to provide tailor-made support for students at risk, it is essential to gain a deep understanding of their own personal experiences, their challenges, their needs, plans and aspirations. It is important that the relevant stakeholders (teachers, counsellors, social workers, etc.) find the best way to understand the students' perspective and involve it in defining and providing the most adequate support that students at risk of early school leaving need.
